Light For Your Way

This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you:  God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth,  But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 1:5-7

Last night after supper my wife asked me if I would like to go for a walk with her.  It was around eight o'clock, the stars were out and there was a little wind blowing through the trees.  We walked hand in hand, sometimes casually talking, other times where it became narrow, we walked one behind the other and it was quiet.

Most of the way the street lights and house lights gave enough light on the road ahead of us to keep us from tripping.  Until, we were almost home and a couple of the street lights had burned out, and there were no house lights on.  There is a park on the other side of the road, and it was dark.  We slowed down so that we didn't trip on anything and finally I got the idea to use my cell phone as a flashlight.

Lets consider that my walk last night with Shelley in the physical can also be somewhat representative of our walk with God in the spiritual.

God is light.  The best way for me to understand that is to say that He is also the truth.  So to walk in light or truth as He is in the light or truth I need to understand His Word.

God's Word is expressed in bodily form through His Son Jesus Christ.  In John's gospel it tells us that "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God."  So to understand the light and the truth I need to understand His Word, Jesus Christ.

In Mark's gospel Jesus breaks down all of Scripture (laws and commandments) into two commandments: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself.  There is no commandment greater then these."

For as long as we were walking in the light of the street lamps the walk was easy and enjoyable, when we got to a place where there was no light, we pretty much came to a stand still.  Spiritually, if we love God first and if we love each other like we love ourselves we will be in God's light.  Our spiritual walk will be easy and enjoyable.
