He must become greater; I must become less.
John 3:30
If you look through a telescope to the farthest point that it can, mark that spot, then go there and reverse looking through the telescope to where you originally started, the earth would look only like a little grain of sand, maybe just a pinpoint of light.
We stand here on earth and look at the horizon and see the vastness of the earth and hope to travel to see some of the world. Some of us might be able go to some of the largest cities on earth with millions of people living in them and see the tallest buildings towering hundreds of floors above us. Some of us might be able to cruise across the largest oceans by boat and experience the vastness of the sea and the power of the waves. Others yet might walk in deserts, or jungles or see some of the greatest wonders of the world and we feel small in comparison to them all.
Yet our world, our life, is all we know and it can seem so large, so much so that it actually becomes the center of the universe.
Yet if we look back through the telescope we see how small our earth is...and how small we must be who inhabit the earth. Notice I said small, NOT insignificant. God so loved the world that he gave (sent) his one and only Son,... The One whom the heavens cannot even contain came to our little home called earth to experience what we do. Hopes, excitement, disappointments, pain, betrayal...and victory!
In today's verse John the baptist realises that when Jesus came and began His ministry, his (John's) ministry/life had to "become less". That does not mean non-existent, it means that it is no longer our wills that come first, but God's. In that there is great freedom, no more having to please people, no more having to keep up with the Jones'.
It was no longer John's responsibility to draw all men to the coming Messiah, his work was done, Jesus had come to fulfil the Scriptures and be our salvation.
It is no longer your responsibility to earn your way into heaven, the work has been done, your salvation is won and your place in heaven is prepared for you.
Practically we still need to:

Practically we still need to:
- work
and pay our bills.
- tithe
and have something to share with those who have nothing.
- teach our children how to live proper godly lives.
- We
stop being self absorbed, self-centred and become God centred and God
focused
- We
trust Him to meet our needs
- We live in victory as we live our lives in Christ
- We 'become less so that He can become greater.'
