Cancelling Debt

...but you must cancel any dept your brother owes you.  However, there should be no poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today.  Deuteronomy 15:3b-5

Shelley and I were reading the bible this morning and we were quietly waiting for the Lord to speak to us in it.  Shelley asked me to read to her what I was reading.  Normally I start my reading in the Psalms each day but today was different.  I felt lead to start reading somewhere in the beginning books of the bible and my eyes fell on Deuteronomy.

First Some Background

In the last several months we have been convicted of carrying a balance on our credit card.  So we have been diligently working to put "extra" money on it to pay down the balance.  We have also made choices to stop "digging" the hole in our finances by not impulse buying or spending frivolously.  In so doing I can share to God's glory that at times when things broke or stopped working they were miraculously provided for, including a nearly new refrigerator and a home phone.  We have also been able to pay for repairs to our roof, several car repairs and changes to airline tickets to Canada.

There still are many financial giants in the land that we need to deal with but by following God's instruction and having faith in our Father we will continue to be victorious in the area of finances.

Back To This Morning

I read most of Deuteronomy 15 from 1-18.  God's Word reminded us of canceling debt to those who owe us and also being fair to those who work for us (even if it's is only a once a month garden service or twice a month cleaning lady).  Of course the message of the life of Jesus Christ is simple, He came and paid a debt that I didn't even know that I had or that I could even pay.  All I had to do was accept it and pass along the generosity of forgiveness to others.

We began forgiving those who had hurt us in the past, who have taken from us what hasn't belonged to them, or not given to us what rightfully belonged to us.  It was such a freeing feeling to confess these things to each other, to reassure ourselves that God has forgiven us and we our offenders.

Now we can confidently face the future knowing that His Word will not come back void to Him, that He is true to His word which tells me today that ... he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the LORD your God...

Prayer

Our Father who lives in heaven, You are Almighty, let your kingdom come, let your will into my life as it is in heaven.
Forgive us and those who have wronged us.
Help us not to love this world more than You.
We honor You with our lives.
Amen
